NUJ reaction to job cuts - you've got to laugh | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 29 June 2009

The NUJ is responding to MEN Media's 'massive attack on local journalism in Stockport and Greater Manchester' by organising a comedy benefit gig next Sunday, 5 July.

Taking place at The Baker's Vault in Stockport, the event will feature an as yet unnamed line up of "three of the best from the North West's comedy circuit."

The location has been selected in the aftermath of the MEN decision to close its editorial office in the town and relocate a depleted number of journalists to the centre of Manchester.

36 editorial jobs have now been lost across the weekly newspaper group through Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire.

Jenny Lennox of the NUJ commented: "There has been a massive attack on local journalism in Stockport and Greater Manchester, which has removed journalists from the communities they serve.

"We are delighted to see that people are prepared to stand up for journalism and show how much it matters."

The gig follows on from "the fantastic success" of a similar event in London in April.

Tickets cost £5 and are available from the NUJ office on 0161 237 5020.

As a good will gesture perhaps some of the comedians on GMEN's board might offer their services!

MEN Media directors could read out their business plan and strategy. That should have us all rolling in the aisles.

The London event was a "fantastic success" raising nearly £700 for striking journalists:

Sunday's event is much needed with more journalists balloting for action over cuts:

Congratulations to Julia Brosnan for organising this. I'm sorry I can't be there but it will be a good night.

It's really important that the NUJ uses all its means to fight the cutbacks in the industry - industrial, political and social.

Events like this are a great way to put our campaigns in front of a new audience. And have a laugh at the same time.
