NUJ reacts to MEN sale, calling it "a very serious development" | Print |  Email to a friend
Tuesday, 09 February 2010

The National Union of Journalists has reacted to today's sale of GMG Regional Media by raising issues concerning jobs, editorial independence and the consolidation of the publishing sector here in the North West.

In a statement the NUJ said that it planned to speak to the Department of Business Innovation and skills over "concerns for diversity of information and media in the North West."

The National Union of Journalists has reacted to today's sale of GMG Regional Media by raising issues concerning jobs, editorial independence and the consolidation of the independent publishing sector here in the North West.
NUJ: concerned
Deputy secretary general Michelle Stanistreet commented: "Trinity Mirror already publishes the Liverpool Post and Echo titles, in addition to a substantial stable of weekly papers across Cheshire and Merseyside. Now it will also control the prestigious Manchester Evening News, which has a series of titles in the region.

"This all raises issues of editorial independence which should be of concern to government and community leaders as well as the media industry."

She continued, noting: "The NUJ's immediate priority is to secure the employment of the MEN workforce and to have real guarantees from Trinity Mirror that the quality and content of MEN publications will be protected.

“We are determined that the jobs and conditions of current employees will be fully protected, and we will be seeking urgent discussions with management to establish investment plans for the development of the papers.”

Bethan Dorsett, mother of the NUJ chapel at the MEN Media weeklies, and Judith Gordon, mother of  the MEN chapel, issued a joint statement that lamented: "It is a sad day when popular regional titles are sacrificed to sustain failing national titles.”

The NUJ knows it is in no position to influence the position regarding jobs, editorial independence.. or indeed anything else. It is rapidly becoming a spent force and following in the footsteps of the National Union of Mineworkers - into obscurity.

goodbye MEN and Echo news teams - hello north west news room with stripped down editorial team. Journalism is becoming a secondary function to TM in favour of selling advertising and services to companies and public sector. This deal will only sound the death knell for independent regional journalism.

All that one can say to The Guardian overlords is thanks for nothing. While the Guardian's editorial staff can reside in the knowledge of free speech and espouse liberal nonsense. The MEN carthorse and its weeklies have been flogged to death, to shore you up in your loss making endeavours.
And in the best traditions true liberal values, when there's a call to the lifeboats, instead of trying to help out its regional titles the Scott Trust is already chuffing well heading off into the sunset!

Here's an idea for NUJ: How about learning from the awful handling of the Trinity Mirror cuts in Birmingham and let the local NUJ team deal with it, rather than sending in the leadership who seem to be only interested in headlines? Does the NUJ really think it's got any right to see the investment plans of companies? Of course it hasn't. As this story proves, the sensible comments come from the local NUJ reps.

Sad to see the NUJ adopt these pointless political postures when they could help hard pressed journos by pushing for some very simple things from GMG and the Scott trust.Such as a guarantee that enhance redundancy terms will stay for say,2 years and be funded by GMG.LIke GMG giving 12 months pension protection(without asking they gave 6 months). They should get written guarantees from Trinity on no job cuts and reversing the crazy decision to move to Oldham
