NUJ to buy shares in Trinity Mirror, JP and ITV | Print |  Email to a friend

Last week's annual NUJ conference in Southport saw the union discussing the deployment of a fresh tactic when it comes to negotiating with publicly listed media firms on behalf of its members. It intends to become a shareholder in the businesses.
The bold move was mooted at the conference by members of the union's Birmingham and Coventry chapels, who successfully lobbied at the Trinity Mirror AGM in May as shareholders.

It will see the NUJ looking to take shares in Trinity Mirror, ITV and Johnston Press, thus allowing members to attend annual general meetings and quiz senior executives and board members about their plans and the treatment of staff at the companies.

Delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking the action, and the union is now said to be conducting a cost and feasibility study ahead of making the move.

"...the union is now said to be conducting a cost and feasibility study ahead of making the move...."
Gawd...plodders to the last....open a share buying account via their bank - all online in about 10 minutes flat - and buy a single share in each company. Not difficult really but I'm sure the NUJ will find a way.... Costs about £12 per purchase regardless of number bought, and ITV is at 53p just now, JP is 25p and trinity is £1.43p. Get on with it won't you?

Better still - why doesn't the NUJ use its resources to wholly finance, launch and manage its own publishing company. It's members are so good at telling media owners how to run their businesses that an NUJ-owned media 'empire' would obviously become a shining example to others on how to run a publishing organisation. Probably wouldn't make any money mind but, what the heck.
