Last week's annual NUJ conference in Southport saw the union discussing the deployment of a fresh tactic when it comes to negotiating with publicly listed media firms on behalf of its members. It intends to become a shareholder in the businesses.
The bold move was mooted at the conference by members of the union's Birmingham and Coventry chapels, who successfully lobbied at the Trinity Mirror AGM in May as shareholders.
It will see the NUJ looking to take shares in Trinity Mirror, ITV and Johnston Press, thus allowing members to attend annual general meetings and quiz senior executives and board members about their plans and the treatment of staff at the companies.
Delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking the action, and the union is now said to be conducting a cost and feasibility study ahead of making the move.
