NUJ to take on the big issues in Southport | Print |  Email to a friend

The annual National Union of Journalists conference is getting set to role into Southport next week, armed with an agenda that will see members discussing a vast array of the burning issues facing the industry today.
Set to be held at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre from 19 to 22 November, the NUJ tells How-Do that the gathering will be "one of the biggest events of the media year", with a host of fringe events open to non-union members and "of interest to How-Do readers."

Casting our eyes over the NUJ diary pages there appears to be a myriad of meeting planned, with everything from conferences on the broadcasting, publishing and freelance sectors, through to fringe events such as Media Workers Against the War, the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and a Guidelines on Reporting Terrorism meeting.

Campaigning hard
The 'when good bosses go bad: industrial action against progressive employers' fringe event may, in the current climate, already be booked up we feel.

In terms of discussion points at the Annual Delegate Meeting itself, the union looks set to highlight issues such as the Digital Britain Report (what it calls "a woefully inadequate response to the crisis facing public service broadcasting") and the under-representation of non-white communities in the journalism profession.

Again, the crisis that has hit the sector over the space of the last 18 months (or thereabouts) is set to take centre stage, with the 'wages, payment and conditions' order paper condeming "the ruthless attacks by media employers on wages and conditions throughout the industry."

You can find out further details of the final agenda here

They'll be the only ones. Don't forget to put de-forestation in Lima on the agenda.

The NUJ will soon be SELLING the Big Issues, never mind "taking them on".

Well done 'Bob' and 'Scribe' for those invaluable contributions and examples of your boundless wit.

Meanwhile, back on earth, where things matter, NUJ members in Southport will be discussing (among many other things):

- Our response to ongoing cuts in the media industry
- The future of public sector broadcasting and the threat to the independence of the BBC
- The role of journalism and journalists in relation to the far right
- The future of the Journalist magazine
- The union's financial situation and democracy
- Press freedom and ethics - including the successful (NUJ-backed) Suzanne Breen case

But why let the facts get in the way of an uneducated snipe?

The real issue is how t'North West can benefit from having the NUJ conference @ Southport! In recent years, hosting the conference has trippled the number of column inches the venue has received nationally. It was the NUJ conference which swung the judges in favour of the Capital of Vandalism becoming the European City of Culture! It would pay t'North West to sponsor a future conference in the region in view of the wider benefits it brings.

I agree Richard - let's keep humour out of politics. Meanwhile, here' s a quick cut-out-and-keep NUJ policy review, based on the points you make above, for those who couldn't make it to Southport.

" - Our response to ongoing cuts in the media industry."; Don't like them. Stop now.
"- The future of public sector broadcasting and the threat to the independence of the BBC."; BBC is headed for a fall when Tories win General Election - NUJ members advised to update CV.
"- The role of journalism and journalists in relation to the far right."; Journalists must simply report everything without fear or favour.
"- The future of the Journalist magazine."; Very limited.
"- The union's financial situation and democracy. "; Dwindling NUJ membership means you're going to be very short of cash.
"- Press freedom and ethics - including the successful (NUJ-backed) Suzanne Breen case."; The press should be free and act ethically.
There you go - could have you all the time and trouble of going to....(muffled titters)...Southport.

Cheers Scribe.

It was no trouble at all. Sign of declining standards on my part however that I omitted the word "saved" between "have" and "you" in my final sentence.
