The annual National Union of Journalists conference is getting set to roll into Southport next week, armed with an agenda that will see members discussing a vast array of the burning issues confronting the industry today.
Set to be held at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre from 19 to 22 November, the NUJ tells How-Do that the gathering will be "one of the biggest events of the media year", with a host of fringe events open to non-union members and "of interest to How-Do readers."
Casting our eyes over the NUJ diary pages there appears to be a myriad of meeting planned, with everything from conferences on the broadcasting, publishing and freelance sectors, through to fringe events such as Media Workers Against the War, the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and a Guidelines on Reporting Terrorism meeting.
Campaigning hard
The 'when good bosses go bad: industrial action against progressive employers' fringe event may, in the current climate, already be booked up we feel.
In terms of discussion points at the Annual Delegate Meeting itself, the union looks set to highlight issues such as the Digital Britain Report (what it calls "a woefully inadequate response to the crisis facing public service broadcasting") and the under-representation of non-white communities in the journalism profession.
Again, the crisis that has hit the sector over the space of the last 18 months (or thereabouts) is set to take centre stage, with the 'wages, payment and conditions' order paper condeming "the ruthless attacks by media employers on wages and conditions throughout the industry."
