Okay, it's not going to be Manchester for The Guardian. It's... | Print |  Email to a friend

The nice people at The Guardian are insisting that we've got it wrong with our report on the rumours of a planned local website service that they're set to launch for the Manchester area.
The nice people at The Guardian are insisting that we've got it wrong with our report on the rumours of a planned local website service that they're set to launch for the Manchester area.

Earlier this week we broke the news that Sarah Hartley, the former head of online content for MEN Media, had been recruited by the national title to progress a plan that had seemingly been waymarked by the 'Guardian Cities Desirability Concept' questionnaire at the tail end of 2008.

This was used to research possible reactions to a branded site for Manchester that would 'connect users with their local community.'

Hartley: looking beyond Manchester?
However, The Guardian team have, on the face of it, been open and adamant about their plans - or the lack of any fixed ones at the time being - with How-Do, admitting that Hartley has been brought on board for projects "which might include a local element" but stressing that we're off the mark with Manchester.

A senior spokesperson relayed to us: "Rumours of an imminent local launch in Manchester are unfounded - we have no plans to to undertake any activity in the city."

They noted that "we are still exploring what we might do" but reiterated - perhaps to be clear that they have no intention of stepping on the toes of sister firm MEN Media - "we have no plans to undertake any activity in Manchester."

If this is the case then it raises questions about exactly where the new local site/project will focus on first.

Edinburgh has now seemingly replaced Manchester as a front-runner within some circles (a week is a very long time in the media, Ed) but The Guardian, again, would not say anything concrete about their plans.

They have, however, promised to keep us updated, and we will do the same with you.

So why release the questionaire about a local site in Manchester and then employ Hartley, a veteran of digital journalism/blogging in the city, to head it?
Something fishy I think.

Well said mr/ms why. The Guardian sent out a questionnaire to selected Manchester movers and shakers last year which indicated as clear as glass that a Manchester site was on the way.

Unless they read How-Do comments and realised how bloody stupid it would be to try and do something against their own brand. Or maybe they realised no-one in Longsight reads the Guardian!

But what if the MEN was sold off at some stage and was no longer linked to The Guardian?
