Of the 254 journalists nationally who took their NCTJ national certificate exams in March, 23 from the North West are now in line for roles as senior reporters.
The Sentinel journalists success rate – five of their number – suggests something is being done particularly well in training terms at the Stoke paper.
The overall pass rate of 50% is understood to be similar to previous years but the first time pass rate of 38% was the lowest for several years.
The successful regional entrants were:
Bridget Aherne, Tameside Reporter Rachel Atkinson, Lancaster Guardian Rebecca Bird, Tameside Reporter Graeme Brown, The Sentinel Gaynor Clarke, Bury Times David Coates, Lancashire Evening Post Penny Coles, Tameside Advertiser Katherine Cooksey, The Sentinel Tim Cunningham, Ilkeston Advertiser Neil Docking, Warrington Guardian Kirsty Elleray, Stockport Express Advertiser James Ferguson, Oldham Advertiser David Johnson, The Sentinel James Liggett, Congleton Chronicle Andrew McCreaddie, Knutsford Guardian Sean McFarlane, The Sentinel Emma Mountford, Middleton & North Manchester Guardian Christina Savvas, The Sentinel Laura Sharpe, Accrington Observer Andrew Simpson, Northwich Guardian Lindsay Southall, Bury Times Matthew Squires, Lancashire Evening Post Simon Thacker, Accrington Observer
