A story about the impact of Asbos on the local community in Salford has swept University of Salford student Sara Pepper to the title of Co-Operative student journalist of the year.
Asbos not the answer? The competition, run in conjunction with campaigning paper The Independent, pitted eight regional student finalists against one another, charging them to write stories based around the Co-Op’s five social goals – tackling crime, social inclusion, climate change, food ethics and modern co-operation.Pepper won through for her hard-hitting piece, which can be read here, winning a £3,000 prize and seeing the story published in Monday’s Independent. The runners up each received £1,000. Jeanette Timmins, Co-operative group board director, said of the competition: "The judges were extremely impressed by the quality of the thought-provoking entries we received for this inaugural Student Journalist of the Year Awards. "It is extremely encouraging to see such talent demonstrated by the journalists of the future." Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
