Manchester Metropolitan University graduate Sarah Poole has joined The Bury Times as a trainee journalist.
Managing to get a foot in the door by applying for a senior reporter’s role, it shows that it’s always worth having a go:
"The job at Bury was a long shot [...]” Poole told us. "In my eagerness I decided to go for it anyway and I was offered a trainee reporter position a few weeks later."
She graduated from Manchester Met with a first class English degree and after becoming a coffee shop manager and a Hollyoaks extra, she decided that a fast track NCTJ course at Liverpool Community College provided a more stable future.
Ironic, as many regional journalists are applying to be Hollyoaks’ extras for the same reason...
"As there were no suitable vacancies at the time I decided to go back to Emap temporarily in a different role as a Sponsorship and Promotions Project Manager and write for pleasure in my own time.
"Since then I've been gaining more and more work experience writing music features and reviews for BBC Manchester online and The Bolton News."
Before blagging her way into The Bury Times:
"I actually love the job and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into some more juicy stories! I guess the next step is passing the NCE (next step up from NCTJ), which will hopefully be in eighteen months time, then after that who knows!"
"My strengths lie in feature writing and I have a real passion for theatre, music and art so my long-term ambitions are to write for an arts and culture supplement. The the big dream would be a national, the Guardian is a favourite of mine!"
