How-Do understands that Network Rail has finally decided upon a publisher for its proposed new daily pm/evening freesheet which will be distributed at Manchester’s Piccadilly station. However the company would not disclose the winner’s identity as contractual discussions are still underway.
Tenders for the new paper were submitted at the end of June and an announcement was initially expected in July.
An early favourite for the contract, News International, publisher of ‘The London paper’ and the registered owner of the title ‘The Manchester paper’ did not ultimately submit a bid. NI’s reasons included the size of the anticipated footprint at around 10,000 copies a day which the company suggested wasn’t viable to run a profitable daily paper.
Persistent market rumours have suggested that the likely victor is MEN Media which submitted a low-cost bid to extend its free Lite offering to the station.
