Questions raised over Porter's future at Crain's, as disciplinary proceedings initiated | Print |  Email to a friend

How-Do has learnt that Arthur Porter's position at the helm of Crain's Manchester Business appears to be uncertain.

Crain's, which entrusted Porter with the launch of its first city business newspaper outside the US, has accused its publisher of gross misconduct and initiated disciplinary hearings against him.

Porter, a vocal and avuncular presence on the Manchester media scene, is believed to have appeared at a meeting concerning the issue today.

It relates to his behaviour at the paper's Best Places to Work event on 9 June this year, which he hosted.

How-Do managed to speak to Porter in what we believe to be the aftermath of today's proceedings, but he would not be drawn on the issue in any way - his only comment being a firm "no comment."

The timing of the hearing has thrown the few that are aware of it on the city's media scene into some confusion.

One openly questioned to How-Do why the proceedings were taking place now, in December, when the event itself occurred in June. While another noted the timing of director of advertising Kathryn Toledano's promotion to the new role of associate publisher.

This latter development was announced in the paper just this week, imparting that Toledano would be "taking on a wider role."

Group publisher Chris Crain said of her move: “She was our first sales person and since joining the business has shown a passion for her work and a dedication to the advancement of our brand in the Manchester marketplace.

“Kathryn has helped to grow this product from an idea to a reality, and from a start-up to the must-read source for business information in Greater Manchester.”

How-Do was awaiting a comment from Crain with regards to the action against Porter at the time of writing.

Porter has been regarded by many within the local business community as very much 'the face' of Crain's since launching the publication two years ago.

During that time he has championed both its editorial commitment and the commercial model that the paper has resolutely stuck to.

The beginning of the end for Crains!

I'm sure Crain's is more concerned about product than personalities

As a potential advertiser there's not a lot to love about Crains - personalities or product. They have done little to woo the business community - in fact their stance appears to be the complete opposite.

Waiting until December to deal with an incident in June doesn't appear to be good form, however, the delay could be for any number of reasons including employee delay.
Perhaps under new less dogmatic leadership Crains will ditch the subscription fee and ramp up a controlled free circulation list, instead of keeping a foot in both camps like Insider who, like Crains have a good product but have unfortunately taken decades to build a very weak readership base.
Oh and take Manchester out of the title, we are not in America!

I attended that event. I like Crain's, I use the information I get in there so it is a shame that scandal like this has materialised. It has taken them time though. As an advertising medium I can understand its strengths but costings also have to be realistic. I suppose we will see how these events unfold.

Your view appears to be quite wide-spread Joe Bloggs but I disagree with you. Crain's is different from Insider, the MEN and other essentially advertorial business titles whihc feel their roles are to promote the buisness community/ies they serve. Crain's is a real business publication whihc believes its role is to deliver business news, although often the news they deliver is unpalatable for many raised on a diet of page after page round-table pieces in Insider & MEN stories of improbable one man band success stories. PRs like Insider/dislike Crain's - enough said. I sadly increasingly feel that Manchester is ultimately too provincial for Crain's and its editorially-led approach. World-class media community here? Bah humbug

I think you'll find the only magazine that point blank refuses to offer to "speak" with the client on condition of placing an ad is EN - which may be why it looks a bit thin these days.

Advertorial - This must be a relatively new policy at EN then.
 9 By supported feature, on 13-12-2009 21:06
Advertorial - Crains, Insider and EN have all, ahem, "relaxed" their policy on advertorial over the last year.

It's called survival - they must all be losing absolute shedloads in the current climate.

Do we have any update on the situation? It seems to have gone a bit quiet.
