The Prince’s Trust is approaching regional media to promote positive PR for young people.
BBC and YouTube have been asked to play central roles in the campaign around the new Youth Week which will take place in November. It comes amid a slurry of negative headlines about young people and the charity’s aim is to change perceptions. It’s believed that talks have already taken place with BBC Nations and Regions and they are also targeting local media to look at stories where young people have done good things for their community.
Horrocks Manchester Evening News editor, Paul Horrocks, told us that he thought it was a great idea and something they would support. "You report news as it comes in and inevitably there are going to be a lot of negative stories as they come through courts and the police.
"But we had already been thinking in the office that the real world is not like that and there are positive stories to be done."
On whether a specific Youth Week could work within the media, he added: "You’ve got to be strong and whatever happens on the news agenda you have to balance with good, community stories."
The Beeb stressed that they are not a partner in the charity, but there could be an opportunity to feature content that may be "editorially relevant" to their careers’ campaign. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
