The ABC figures for newspaper sales for the six months to December 2007 have seen a continuing fall in paid-for copies of papers while the number of free copies keeps increasing.
All the region’s dailies saw declines in paid-for circulation.
The only newspaper to increase its circulation in total was the Manchester Evening News. Its overall increase however was a result of more free copies being distributed to cover what was a further fall in paid-for copies.
The Daily Post also increased the number of free papers it distributed on Merseyside but this marginal increase in the number of frees from 6,406 to 6,506 wasn’t sufficient to outweigh the decline in paid-fors.
Conversely, the majority of the regionals are reporting strong growth in online traffic and digital revenue but as reported by Trinity yesterday, digital revenues typically account for between 5 to 10% of newspapers’ total revenues.
