Riley suspended from the Echo | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 28 September 2007
Joe Riley, arguably the region’s best known arts correspondent – or at least its longest serving – has been suspended from the Echo.

The row, which had been simmering for some time, boiled over during the interval at the preview of King Cotton earlier this week. Riley and Jimmy McGovern were seen and heard exchanging heated verbals, when Riley had woken up that is...

McGovern was subsequently heard on Radio Merseyside but unfortunately Riley was unavailable for comment when contacted by How-Do.

Riley’s blog, the Life of Riley, has been vocal in its criticism of the majority of the city’s fathers in their mismanagement of major cultural events. He and McGovern have also enjoyed run-ins previously.

A signed petition has been organised by Riley's colleagues and sent to Old Hall Street management demanding his immediate reinstatement. Trinity management declined to respond to How-Do's enquiries.

Any further material, info or pictorial evidence would be much appreciated!

Jimmy McGovern should hang his head in shame

Big Fat Joe's column has been slagging the great and the good off recently. He knows a little but not a lot about what's going on in the city. Sadly Echo subs know a whole lot less and can't spot the massive errors in his copy.

Sadly Joe is clearly past his sell-by date...but the manner of his dismisal was piss-poor given his service to the paper/s over 30 years plus.

And McGovern doesn't need to be a bully.

Not long is it since they gave him extra space to do the opinionated loudmouth thing for them.

Humbugs.

Yes Joe can be piss poor and needs better subs but compare him to the inane shopkeepers and blaggers writing "Six in the City" and he is at least a journalist. He has a loyal following at least.
He is past it to a certain extent but he should be given some leaway by a paper that has sold its soul to the Capital of Culture devil.

Was Joe really sacked for falling asleep? I went to see the play and sleep seemed an appropriate response to me. Certainly he wasn't the only one who opted for it.

If MCGovern wanted to do something positive he could appeal for clemency on Joe's behalf to the Echo. Don't hold your breath though. Riley is the only ace left in the pisspoor echo. And he's not been sacked yet so hopefully they'll yet see sense.
