Bosses at the Manchester Evening News are claiming that the paper has retained its position as ‘the UK’s largest regional daily newspaper’ with its latest ABC figure of 180,900.

In a statement released today, MEN Media managing director Mark Rix noted that the paper is responding well to market pressures and actively fighting the declining fortunes in the regional press sector by meeting challenges head on.

As evidence of this the group highlighted that readership of the paper has increased 19% (Jicreg April 2006 vs October 2007), while the ABC1 audience has been bolstered significantly by the increased emphasis on the 98,455 copies free-to-pick-up copies. The number of paid-for copies declined by 6.4% to 81,326.

Bosses at the Manchester Evening News are claiming that the paper has retained its position as ‘the UK’s largest regional daily newspaper’ with its latest ABC figure of 180,900.
Rix: pleased
It was also claimed that “the paper is currently outperforming the market in terms of its advertising revenue, being 8% up on national display advertising.”

Rix said of the results: “I am pleased we are starting 2008 where we want to be.

“We acknowledge that these remain challenging times for our industry and have responded by breaking new ground in how we get the news to people in our area.

“When we took the bold decision to introduce a part free part paid Manchester Evening News, we were responding to the needs of readers and advertisers, and taking control of our future.  We aren’t frightened of facing the circulation decline of the regional press full on and looking for ways to attract new readers, while maintaining our important paid for readers.”

The group added that through its overall media portfolio it now achieves a weekly reach of more than 85% of people in Greater Manchester, making it “the region’s number one media group.”

'the UK’s largest regional daily newspaper’

hello, London Evening Standard?

London isn't a 'region' or generally referred to as 'regional'. So the MEN IS the largest 'regional' rag. I thank you and good night.

The London Evening Standard is a newspaper in its own right - It doesnt rely on recycled Metro news items.

so london is not a region. on what basis? i mean, is manchester a city?

i did cooking instead of geography at school but i reckon london isn't a country.

also, the MEN lags behind the express & star in the west midlands, 130k+, and the liverpool echo (another city) 108k+. i'm old fashioned but i'm talking paid for here.

the MEN is to regionals what ringo was to the beatles. not even the best drummer in the band.

But what about all the hundreds of discarded MENs cluttering up the streets, not to mention the buses, trains, and trams, every day? This isn't an anti-MEN rant; all free papers suffer this fate. For Mark Rix to say it distributes nearly 100,000 copies daily and to then claim they're read by ABCs is more than a little disingenuous. The paper is editorially weak, and everyone in the city knows it. In this morning's Independent, Andrew Gilligan is quoted as saying that "you've got quite reputable local newspapers being produced by 22-year-olds on 15 grand a year."
