Legendary rock cartoonist Ray Lowry has been found dead at his home in Rossendale, he was 64.
Lowry: The Clash
It comes just days after a major retrospective of his work opened at See Gallery in the town, his first exhibition for 30 years.
Lowry’s passion for rock and punk brought him fame in the 70’s with cartoons published in the NME and Punch.
He was part of the Manchester scene that drew inspiration from the Sex Pistol’s tour to the city, but rather than Johnny Rotten and gang, he befriended The Clash at the Electric Circus.
Lowry went over to America with them in 1979 and designed the sleeve artwork for London Calling.
He was respected by the music and art world alike, Damien Hirst, John Peel and Patti Smith are known to have bought his work.
The gallery said that they will keep his work on display permanently in his memory. There had been plans to take the exhibition on tour to America and China.
