Salford Star aims to force Hazel Blears to resign | Print |  Email to a friend

Community magazine The Salford Star, known for its ability to create a news 'blast' from time to time, is spearheading a new campaign that aims to force local MP Hazel Blears to step down from Parliament.
Blears: Star struck
Blears resigned from Gordon Brown's embattled Cabinet in the midst of the expenses row that has embroiled both sides of the political spectrum, while further undermining Labour's ever-weakening grip on power.

However, she has retained her parliamentary seat and stated that she intends to stand in the next general election - two outcomes that the Star, and its supporters, apparently find difficult to stomach.

The title has now pledged to be the first group to back a move to force Blears to stand down and is using its publishing and community connections to try and drum up support from residents’ associations, trade unions, community organisations, workers and residents of Salford.

The below letter is now being circulated by The Star, led by the campaigning Stephen Kingston, in an effort to build support behind the cause.

The Star: does it get your vote?
Over the last few weeks Hazel Blears has shown that she is no longer fit to represent the people of Salford.

In the wake of extravagant expenses claims and avoidance of Capital Gains Tax we believe that she has abused the system, which we find morally and ethically disgusting.

Hazel Blears resigned from the Cabinet (in the most undignified way) but she is still our MP and says that she intends standing at next year’s General Election.

It is down to us, her constituents, to make our feelings known and force her to resign as MP for Salford. Right here. Right now!

We would like trade union branches, residents and community groups and individuals to join our campaign - Hazel Must Go!

Together we can demand justice for the people of Salford.

To add your name to the Campaign please contact us at blearsmustgo@gmail.com

* The Hazel Must Go Campaign is not aligned to any political party
* The Hazel Must Go Campaign is backed by the Salford Star

Be careful you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Of course abuse of allowances is wrong. Of course she knew it was wrong. MP's are just one of may groups in this country who having access to funds, line their own pockets. Compared with the bankers rip-off and gordon Browns reckless selling of gold reserves and raiding the pension funds, this was very small cheese.

We all screw up and must expect to be pulled up short. the crucial question is what will MP's , including Ms Blears do now. if they make practical steps to clean up Westminsters act - fine. if they avoid it, then get rid.
the other consideration is Hazel Blears record in Salford. Has she benefited the community in a practical way. is it likely to continue? If so then you need a way of reprimanding her without necessarily sacking her.
If you want to sack her no matter what, then examine your own motives a little more closely.

One wonders whether the Salford Star will be addressing the 1 in 10 of its audience that voted BNP in a campaigning righton kinda way.

The arrogance of this women, when many of her constituents are on the breadline, this women abuses her position of trust. I hope the people of Salford show this women, the error of her ways and kick her out at the next election.

The baby and bathwater comment is absolutely ludicrous.

Hazel Blears along with many of her colleagues have for years been campaigning to hold others to very (some would say unrealistic) standards. The last week’s events have shown that not only do the MPs and especially Blears not operate according to these same standards but they are also lacking in moral fiber to make decisions when presented with areas of grey.

It is ridiculous to say that the issue is not that they have been caught but how they now deal with the issue.

IF YOU LACK A MORAL COMPASS YOU CANNOT HOLD YOURSELF OUT TO BE A LEADER.

Is there somewhere I can donate money to get rid of this woman?
