Salford Star challenges council’s LIFE decision today | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 03 November 2008
The Salford Star magazine is taking its fledgling campaign against the expansion of Salford council’s LIFE title a step further today, as it works with opposition councillors to ‘call in’ the decision to increase its frequency and pagination.

How-Do was contacted by Salford Star founder and chief campaigner Stephen Kingston on Friday with news of the ‘call in’.

Scratching our collective craniums about what this actually entailed, Kingston explained, stating, “if enough councillors sign a petition they can call in any decision made by the council… in theory they can overturn the decision.”

LIFE getting called in today
He continued, noting that opposition councillors are firmly against the expansion plans, but added that he wasn’t yet aware if there were enough to reject the proposal.

A public meeting taking place at Swinton Civic Centre today at 1pm will provide the venue for the face off between Kingston, the council and the opposition, although the Star man has been informed that he, as a member of the public, won’t be allowed to ask questions.

“We’re going to challenge that,” he said.

Speaking of the situation in general, he concluded: “I asked the council for a full breakdown of the £175k figure a week ago and am still waiting for an answer - good job we're not a daily paper.

“We're going to the meeting on Monday to see how democracy works in Salford - can a ridiculous decision to spend £175k (possibly more) on the council's own propaganda sheet be overturned?

“Will we be able to speak at the meeting? Will the council decide to release information on how they've come up with the figure?"

If any How-Do readers are in the vicinity of the civic centre this lunchtime it might be worth popping in… it has the potential to be a pretty interesting meeting.
