Community magazine The Salford Star finds itself in illustrious company this year, as it makes it onto the shortlist for the prestigious Paul Foot Award for Campaigning Journalism.
A local Star The Star made it onto the long-list of the awards last year, but has trumped that on this outing and will now battle it out against six other publications (ranging from Private Eye to the Doncaster Free Press) for a £5000 first prize. Runners up will receive a £1000 award, which, according to the paper, “will go straight into the Star's Fighting Fund to help pay print costs on future issues.”The judges for the award, which “demonstrates that the spirit of investigative journalism is alive and flourishing”, said of the title: “The Salford Star is a free magazine, surviving from hand to mouth, written and produced by Salfordians for Salfordians as the staff say, ‘with attitude and love’. “That word attitude sums up the approach of the magazine to Salford Council - which has been so irritated by that attitude that it has blocked its funding applications and removed minutes from its website to stop the Star finding out about council decisions. Page after page of the Star attacks the council: thanks to the Star The Lowry has dropped charges for community groups. Thanks to the Star, Salford Council has been shamed into supporting the Salford Film Festival.” The winner of the award will be announced this Monday, 15th October. The Salford Star distributes some 15,000 free copies on a quarterly basis. http://www.private-eye.co.uk/sections.php?section_link=paul_foot& Something to add?
