Salford Star scores 'little victory' over Council as LIFE plans 'criticised' | Print |  Email to a friend
Tuesday, 04 November 2008
Salford Council’s plans for its LIFE IN Salford publication apparently encountered a set back yesterday, as the Salford Star’s campaign against the title’s proposed expansion seemed to bear fruit.

As regular How-Do followers will be aware, the Star’s Stephen Kingston is fighting his local council over the LIFE initiative and yesterday took that battle to the Strategy and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee meeting at Swinton Civic Centre.

Salford Council’s plans for its LIFE IN Salford publication apparently encountered a set back yesterday, as the Salford Star’s campaign against the title’s proposed expansion seemed to bear fruit.
Star: campaign against LIFE
According to an update from Kingston, the committee voted eight to one against the proposal to increase its pagination and frequency and “criticized the way the decision had been taken.”

He added: “I got a chance to ask a few questions and questioned the political neutrality of the mag, given that there's no opposing views to the council's in the publication.

“Council leader John Merry himself admitted that if an Ombudsman’s report went against the council they wouldn't put it in LIFE.

“I also questioned how popular the move would be in the community, given that the East Salford Community Committee voted overwhelmingly against it at last week's meeting.”

Kingston informed How-Do that Councillor Merry would now be taking the issue to the next council meeting.

He concluded: “If it does go to the full council they can overturn this decision (the vote against the proposal) - which they probably will because they've got an inbuilt Labour majority - but in the meantime, every little victory for democracy must be celebrated.”

Back in the late 60s the city had an excellent broadsheet weekly, the Salford City Reporter with an arcerbic columnist, deputy editor Saul Reece who made Martin Regan look like a shrinking violet.
It carried two whole pages of nibs of court reports and extensive local politics. But then so did the MEN. Today the GMEN's local Advertiser is a pile of c**p. No wonder Merry has such an easy ride apart from the Star.
