Samuel sets the record straight on Business North West as bogus site appears | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 22 June 2009

Eddie Samuel, the publisher of Business North West, has responded to a 'bogus' and derogatory holding page that has appeared at the publication's original domain address, while noting that he believes it is connected with some of the criticism of him and the recently launched magazine that has appeared on How-Do.
Eddie Samuel, the publisher of Business North West, has responded to a 'bogus' and derogatory holding page that has appeared at the publication's original domain address, while noting that he believes it is connected with some of the criticism of him and the recently launched magazine that has appeared on How-Do.

Samuel and his firm Mellor Media launched the delayed title last week opining that he was "very, very happy with the product" but that "there have been a few little indifferences along the way" that had facilitated its late arrival.

Since then How-Do has received numerous comments, not all of them publishable, connected to the story, with the majority being critical of the publication.

In addition, it has come to How-Do's attention that a website has appeared at the original domain name registered for the title - www.bnwmagazine.co.uk - that has seemingly been created to undermine the nascent brand and Samuel's plans to make it an established name in the regional business community.

Samuel: happy with the product
The text on the site starts with the sentence "a good domain name for the publication by southerners to steal money from northerners" and finishes with the equally dismissive "thank you for letting the Northwest business community down."

Samuel believes the site, and much of the criticism of Business North West, can be linked back to one source - a former colleague that has acrimoniously split from his firm.

In response to the site he released the following bullet-pointed statement to How-Do:

  • A previous sales colleague parted company with BNW Magazine towards the end of March this year, having produced zero sales in 12 weeks, other than assist in collating a Business Link Northwest transaction. This person was indeed being paid in advance for this to support the situation.
  • There was no written sales contract in place so the deal was purely verbal, based on an experiment for the launch issue which if successful would be subject to said person having shares in the title.
  • In January, said individual bought domains www.bnwmagazine.co.uk and .com, with his credit card on behalf of BNW Magazine.
  • When said person was released; somewhat disgruntled; their first action was to create new passwords for that domain name, meaning it was then unusable for BNW Magazine, and as such I had to find an alternative, hence the change to www.bnw-magazine.co.uk and .com – note the hyphen difference. This is now and has been for some months the official BNW Magazine web site. The old one has nothing to do with BNW Magazine.
  • For information, said individual is now threatening legal action saying they have shares in the business based on some supportive email exchanges between us in January and February. This is totally ill founded, and has no substance, as all financial input came from Mellor Media Ltd., and there were no contracts in place.
  • I feel too that certain ‘bogus’ comments are being made on How-Do too, due to some of the content which is pretty much unknown outside of the parties concerned.

Business North West is currently bi-monthly with a circulation of over 10,000.

The launch issue boasted features on Manchester, Google and Sport in Business, as well a feature on 'founding partner' Mere Golf and Country Club.

Samuels bullet point 5 >

1.>>I suggest Samuel consults a solicitor, my undertstanding is that supportative emails will be legally binding

2.>>Not a good start for a new magazine overall it seems, and Samuel I must say - you seem to be blaming everyone but yourself.

3.>> Your launch relase on how-do clearly shows many people do not like your product, not just one person who you claim is out to get you....

4.>> You earlier claimed cyber sabotage when your former partner took back the domains he owned...Have you been reading to much Tom Clancy..

5.>> This has left me doubting Samuels credibility and to be frank honesty I will be very interested to see a response from the person he is talking about I would assume the above to be very inaccurate.

The fake website is not going to do anything but damage the reputation of whoever is behind it. Its a very unprofessional thing to do. I haven't seen the magazine but it will live or die on its quality, or lack of it, end of story.

A friend has alerted me to this, as I am the saidperson I felt obliged to respond.

I do not use how-do a great deal and have had no hand in any response about the launch of this magazine, I no longer own these domains so any web site about your magazine has nothing to do with me. - try a whois if you know how and you can see this as fact.

I dispute evey point you have made but am leaving this in my solicitors hands as evidence is what they tell me matters not what you think is contractual and what is not.

I must ask the question...if I am suing you for half my business back, why would I wish the magazine not to succeed..? (If you cannot seee the answer I will supply it)

The more it succeds the more I gain when my case is a success.

This I think will clearly demonstrate I have no hand in and negative feedback on the magazine in any way anywhere.

By the way thank you for this article, my lawyers feel this is beneficial to my case.

Somebody should produce a TV comedy based on this - it's unreal!

What a pity these chaps didn't call their mag Management Today. If you want to control a domain name, buy it with your own credit card next time! What an utter shambles.

Samuel has made an important admission in his response. He should see a solicitor before making further public comment.
That said, fighting legally over the carcass of this title is probably not worth it for either party.
Unless of course Samuel can persuade a solicitor to help in exchange for opportunity to be a founding partner.
Interesting Mellor didn't launch a local title but you know what they say, don't do it on your own doorstep.

Very silly all round really
Not doing anybody any good

I remember that one of the lad's mags, possibly Loaded or FHM, used to run a monthly competition which would be won by whichever reader sent in a photograph of themselves reading said mag in some remote or in accessible place - at the bottom of the Mariana Trench or on top of Osama Bin Laden's bidet etc.
I think the time is now right for How-Do to launch its own variant, but this time it is only open to publishers and senior sales staff of magazines with a predominantly north-west focussed circulation.
All they need to do is send in a pic of themselves posting a media pack, should they possess one, in the spot deemed to be the remotest from the back bar of the White Lion on Castlefield.
The winner, should they ever set foot in the city, is entitled to a free pint next time we share a time zone.

Anyone that launches a new print magazine with the current surge in web news readership must be insane.

Any business should know by now that the most valuable asset in a business these days are it's website and domain names.

Maybe Samuel should be working on getting some interesting content in his Advertorial, I mean Magazine, to make sure someone bothers to read it!!

It would be interesting to hear from any of the organisations featured in this launch issue. are they happy to be linked with all of these accusations and counter accusations?

For info., herewith a copy of an email (amongst many congratulatory others) from the previous oenwer of BNW Magazine (plus 7 other regional titles in the group) and indeed owner of the overall parent company W&J Linney based in Mansfield. Notts.

Ed,
I really think it looks great. Congratulations. It will be whether it's numbers stack up that is key. Don't get drawn down market or into an ethical issue of overstating your print run etc. Mellor Media already has a reputation that you now need to look after.
Brilliant, well done.
Best

Owner BNW: Isn't Nick Linney the actual owner of the title name (certainly he was the former owner and publisher)? Hardly impartial then.

Love the inclusion of the "Information contained in this email or any attachment may be of a confidential nature which should not be disclosed to, copied or used by anyone other than the addressee"

Hilarious

Permission was given to use the email as a PROFESSIONAL example opinion of the magazine - not false, invisible, behind the door, cheap accusations.

For information, Nick Linney stated openly that the magazine was better than anything previously published under the title of BNW (which was a slightly different name than the current one anyway).

I notice the incriminating text from the bogus web site www.bnwmagazine.co.uk has disappeared - bit if a coincidence?....
