John Bird, assistant editor at The Bolton News and the deputy news editor Andrew McFarlane are leaving the paper.
Bird is understood to be taking early retirement while McFarlane is leaving the paper for ‘personal reasons’ which will see him relocate to London.
McFarlane is hoping to freelance in the interim period. He told How-Do that he was “looking forward to a new challenge down south in whatever role I take on. I have many friends in London and plan on enjoying the capital while I still have the chance.”
McFarlane joined the paper in December 2006 after working on the North West Enquirer and prior to that on the Hull Daily Mail.
Last November at the Northern Journalist of the Year Awards in Leeds he was chosen as ‘Feature Writer of the Year’ for his articles on the economic situation in Bolton relating to immigrants bridging the skills gap.
Bird joined the News six years ago as assistant editor (production) and has remained in that position throughout his time with the paper.
