The Newspaper Society’s annual circulation, editorial and promotions awards 2008 held at Crewe Hall in Cheshire last week saw just two winners emerge from the North West amid slim pickings overall for the region’s publishers.
The Chorley and Leyland Guardian won a gold in the campaigning weekly paid-for category while sports photographer Alex Severn of the Sentinel picked up an individual gold.
The only other winners in the region were the Heywood Advertiser and Ben Rossington of the Echo who won silvers. A further five papers were shortlisted. The Heywood Advertiser has run a number of high profile community initiatives over the past year including its ‘Heywood Heroes’ campaign, which celebrated the people of Heywood who have contributed most to their local communities.
Newspaper Society director David Newell said: "This year's awards ceremony showcased just some of the many successes achieved by NS members during the past 12 months.
"The quality of work from the circulation, editorial and promotions departments has proved to be outstanding yet again."
Mary's Prayer Chris Maguire, editor of the Chorley Guardian told How-Do that “it was a great feat for the paper to win against so many much larger publications.
“It’s probably been the biggest campaign in the paper’s history which dates back to 1871.”
The weekly paper which sells just over 14,000 copies, won the gold award for its “Mary’s Prayer” campaign. The campaign, which was launched in March 2007, was dedicated to Mary Wilson, the then mayor of Chorley. The campaign aimed to raise £8,000 but ultimately raised over £53,000.
Wilson unfortunately died three days before the award was announced.
Maguire said that the campaign “aimed to make a difference and it did which I believe is the greatest tribute we could have paid to Mary.”
