Stuart Maconie joins Cumbria Life | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 08 September 2008
Cumbria Life magazine changes its frequency from bi-monthly to monthly this week, and will be making extra waves in the local media pond (or rather Lakes) with the news that it has signed up a new high profile columnist.

Stuart Maconie, a resident of the Lake District, enjoys near legendary status in the North West broadcast and journalism arenas due to his decades-long career, particularly with regard to the music industry.

Cumbria Life magazine changes its frequency from bi-monthly to monthly this week, and will be making extra waves in the local media pond (or rather Lakes) with the news that it has signed up a new high profile columnist.
Going monthly now
He currently broadcasts alongside How-Do media personality of the year Mark Radcliffe on the BBC Radio 2 show Radcliffe and Maconie.

This beams out four nights a week from the corporation’s Manchester studios.

Alongside music, the great outdoors appears to be Maconie’s other presiding passion (he has also written columns for Emap’s Country Walking magazine), which in part was the catalyst for his move to the Lakes.

Editor Richard Eccles told How-Do that Maconie jumped at the chance to be involved.

"Stuart's a brilliant writer who has a real affection for Cumbria,” he said.

“When I offered him the column he said 'when can I start?'

“I think county magazines in general need to find a lot more humour and have a bit of an edge to complement the glossy lifestyle content if they are to continue to attract new readers in the 35-55 bracket.

“So writers like Stuart and Dave Myers (one half of the Hairy Bikers) are really important."

Eccles also revealed that sales of the title are currently up by nearly 20%, which he suggested provided a great springboard for the move to a monthly publication.

Cumbria Life is part of the CN Magazines portfolio and is published in Carlisle by the independent CN Group.
