The number of regional press websites, radio stations and niche publications all grew by over 20% last year as regional newspaper companies turned to online and other broadcast channels to deliver their local news and information.
Whitehair Figures published by The Newspaper Society show the number of websites grew from 828 to 1102 and the number of stand-alone magazines and niche publications grew by 21 per cent from 595 to 755. The number of ‘core’ regional newspaper titles nudged up marginally 1303. The regional press now runs 36 radio stations and two television stations – including Channel M – and a number of online ‘television’ and video streaming services available on their newspaper websites. Russell Whitehair, president of the Newspaper Society and chairman of North Wales Newspapers said: “The regional press is growing and reaching new audiences across its print and digital platforms. We know that 40 million people already read a local paper in print. Growth in local newspaper websites means they now collectively represent one of the top UK online properties, attracting an estimated 20 million unique users a month* – which would put it above the BBC, alongside Yahoo! and within striking distance of eBay, MSN and Google.” However, the dilemma for the industry remains that while there has been substantial growth in the development of local press websites, online advertising revenues – which grew by 18.3% last year - accounted for just £71 million - 2.5% - of total regional press ad revenues, with print contributing 94.5%. Total regional press turnover last year was £3.87 billion with advertising and sponsorship revenue accounting for 73 per cent of the total, £2.83 billion.
