Following the recent closure of the comments section relating to Bolton Wanderers, the paper has now shut down its entire comments facility.
Staff at the paper were reluctant to discuss the issue with How-Do.
Savage
Ian Savage, the editor issued the following statement.
“The facility to pass comment on stories uploaded to www.theboltonnews.co.uk has today been suspended.
“The decision to do so was made following complaints about a number of posts which breached our terms and conditions, and because certain stories have been hijacked by a minority of web readers who have used them as a forum for petty arguments.
“The online comment facility is intended to provide the facility for readers to pass meaningful comments on the issues raised in articles.
“Abuse of it will not be tolerated. The suspension will be in place until further notice.”
Gartside (right) in happier times
It is understood that one poster in particular kept repeating one single unnecessarily long posting (albeit tame) which he (?)) added to virtually every story on the site over the week-end and there were a large number of complaints.
The paper also recently pulled its Wanderers comments section after fans left hate email on the site (related to manager Gary Megson) which disclosed chairman Phil Gartside's phone number and home address.
Gartside was subsequently inundated with calls and letters.
