The Magazine back on the streets in May | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 11 April 2008
Lifestyle title The Magazine will return in May under the new ownership of Plus Market-quoted Alavaston Media plc. Alvaston bought the title and assets of the monthly lifestyle publication in February following its closure.

The monthly title which claimed a circulation of 10,000 was launched by Nicola Smith - sister of one time IT girl, and teenage bride of Bill Wyman, Mandy Smith – in 2004. The magazine was heralded as ‘Manchester and Cheshire’s leading A-list magazine’.

The next issue which will be over 100 pages is promised to be “sexier, smarter and sassier than ever.”

Alvaston intends that the publication will become ABC audited in due course – it wasn’t previously – and is initially maintaining the distribution at 10,000 copies. Copies are circulated through bars, clubs, restaurants and certain shops such as Harvey Nicks.

Smith
Smith, who has been retained as MD said: "The last few months have been difficult and challenging 'but I am completely re-energised by the opportunity and the team we've put in place.

“I am confident that with the new look magazine and all the hard work that has gone into creating it, that The Magazine will be bigger and better than ever before.

"We now have the financial backing to re position our distribution in order to gain maximum exposure for our advertisers. We will be ABC audited which will give us more credibility with the agencies and advertisers.”

Smith should be able to benefit from the larger resources that Alvaston brings.

In addition to providing support from its advertising agency, Creation ADM, Alvaston has appointed Brazen to help publicise the relaunch and has also brought in the experienced ad salesman Tony Steenson as a consultant to the title.

The new editor is Jenni Shuttleworth, previously with Jigsaw Media and her deputy will be Tom Mason, who previously worked at Your Quarter magazine.

Alvaston said it intends to start trying to convert free to paid-for sales after six months of the new operation.

The Magazine faces an arguably more competitive market now than it did when its last issue (December 2007) was published. MEN Media is relaunching its weekly publication Urban Life with a greater emphasis on lifestyle and entertainment while YQ magazine is claiming that its next issue will be its biggest to date.

There's no claim about it. May's YQ NORTHWEST will be 160 pages and will be available from April 28th with an emphasis on weddings. Get yours while you can as they are sure to go quickly from the 327 free distribution points. Failing that you can buy one from most supermakets, though for some reason Sainsbury seem to be be oblivious to our charms!

So.. Not a mention of paying back the people that The Magazine owed last time out then?

Nice move Ms Smith.

I think this one is probably doomed to failure also.

What happened to Amanda? She is probably too embarassed to show her face again, unlike Nicola.

So they aim to convert this publication from 'free' to 'paid-for' eh? According to ABC its previous average monthly sales were 129 copies. Let's hope this SEXIER, SASSIER version reaches the same DIZZY heights!

AL - I agree with you re: The Magazine's previous debts - even an apology would have been nice so come on Nicola, what about it?

In my opinion Amanda Gleave has made the right decision to move on although, as previous joint owner, an apology from her would be nice also!

In both cases - would be nice but I wouldn't bet on it.

Amanda - if nothing else, at least you have had the guts to respond which is more than can be said for Nicola Smith!

I have not heard anyone within the industry expressing the slightest interest in the possible return of The Magazine so you are best out of it.

Best of luck for the future.

Both Amanda and I lost large amounts of money investing into a business we believed in wholeheartedly. The last year was extremely traumatic as we fought to keep The Magazine going with promises of investment and business support reneged upon. We are very apologetic to those who lost out but it is unfair to brandish this type of acidic comment without knowing the full story.

Going forward I have endeavored to work with past suppliers and all business plans and expenditure will be tightly monitored. Any queries please email me nicola@themagazineuk.com.

Come on Ms Smith - get a grip! You were MD of your own publishing businrss that failed. No disgrace in that.

However, in your recent statements you have blamed - amongst others - your then competitors (for competing against you I presume)and you have blamed potential investors (for not investing their own money in a business that was obviously struggling - what an earth were they thinking of?). The cleaners appear to have got away with it with their reputations still intact.

Has it dawned on you yet that, as MD of the business you once owned, that you may have to take some responsibility for its failure.

Your apparent willingness to apportion blame on others must be an inspiration to your new employers.

The Magazine's website appears to have been taken offline - www.themagazineonline.co.uk - is this an omen for the publication itself?
 9 By Jonathan Wilde, on 19-05-2008 13:54
Has anyone seen a copy of this revamped magazine yet?
 10 By Swimming, on 19-05-2008 20:20
Jonathan - my mate Lord Lucan has a copy! Once he's finished with it, Bin Laden wants to take a look, then I'll pass it to you! Ha ha
 11 By jonathan Wilde, on 19-05-2008 18:41
Swimming - thank you for the thought but please tell Osama he can keep it. The prospect of having to read it is bound to make him break his cover and run!
 12 By Magoo, on 19-05-2008 21:39
Come on guys, stop taking pot shots at an easy target.

The Magazine deserves a chance doesn't it? These people are putting their money where their mouth is and having a go.

That's more than most people manage, so good luck to them I say.
 13 By Swimming, on 20-05-2008 21:29
Magoo - while I respect that they're putting their money where their mouth is, they need to invest more in pre-launch comms.

This article talks about a May launch and I don't think I'm the only one of the NW's media scene who's heard little since this was published - hence my little 'elusive' jibe.

I wish them every success and advise them to keep their target audience informed, even if this means talking about delays.

Jonathan - Bin Laden returned my copy, but I've misplaced it. I'm sure I left it by the Holy Grail!

I've been one of the lucky ones to read May's edition of The Magazine - and most impressed I was. It has some really well written articles by the new writers, and I hope for more of the same with the June issue.
 15 By A Treat, on 28-05-2008 11:14
"and most impressed I was. It has some really well written articles by the new writers" hopefully this is ironic but i suspect not.
 16 By Jonathan Wilde, on 28-05-2008 10:58
Come on 'Rumor' and ' A Treat' ... if you spend so much time praising yourselves you won't get the next issue out!
 17 By Alex Keeling, on 28-05-2008 22:43
In my own opinion, some of you are being way too harsh on Nicola. She's making a real effort. You should give her a break and see what she comes up with next. She is a MD, after all.
 18 By Rumor, on 29-05-2008 12:59
With regards to the 'if you spend so much time praising yourselves...' comment, hand on heart I can say I don't work for The Magazine. I just genuinely liked reading it. Mind you, I don't expect you cynics to believe me!
 19 By jonathan Wilde, on 29-05-2008 16:24
Hi Rumor .. don't know whether to believe you or feel sorry for you.
 20 By Rumor, on 29-05-2008 18:05
Well I certainly do not expect you to feel sorry for me. Belief is the way forward.
 21 By Swimming, on 29-05-2008 22:18
Rumor - where did you get hold of The Magazine and do you know what's happening with distribution?

Also, is it true that Iraqi insurgents have kidnapped a shipment of the magazines and are now looking to trade them for gold bullion, Nazi treasure and AK47s?
 22 By Rumor, on 30-05-2008 10:23
Swimming - The Magazine arrived at our offices for everyone's perusal. For some reason distribution across the city centre doesn't seem to have been their top priority - perhaps someone else can shed some light on this?

Trading The Magazine for gold bullion? Who knew it was worth that?
 23 By biggie, on 30-05-2008 11:59
Our office received a few copiesand we thought it was okay to be honest - certainly has potential. Crap cover pic tho.
 24 By Peter Pickering, on 30-05-2008 12:05
Not seen a copy anywhere - advertisers must be pleased! I have received an e-mail inviting me to their re-launch party - so nothing has changed here then with a party taking priority over publishing.
 25 By Jonathan Wilde, on 30-05-2008 12:08
Okay compared to what? The Beano?
 26 By Rumor, on 30-05-2008 13:46
I liked the Beano. Well, before its facelift. Jonathan, you talked about feeling sorry for me...the emotion is reflected back to you, as you seem unnecessarily irate. Let's hope you get to see June's edition, in an attempt to quash this rage.
 27 By Jonathan Wilde, on 30-05-2008 15:06
Rumor ... replace 'irate' with 'amused'.
