The Skinny denies imminent Manchester launch | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 05 February 2010

Scottish culture and listings magazine The Skinny has told How-Do that it will not be launching a Manchester edition "any time soon." The denial comes against a background of contact between the publishers and various figures in the local arts and culture scene and the admission that they do have "someone looking at building content" for the city.

Scottish culture and listings magazine The Skinny has told How-Do that it will not be launching a Manchester edition "any time soon." The denial comes against a background of contact between the publishers and various figures in the local arts and culture scene and the admission that they do have "someone looking at building content" for the city.
Big plans for Manchester?
The Skinny launched in Glasgow and Edinburgh in late 2005 and has since grown into Scotland's largest independent listings and events magazine, distributed free through outlets such as bars, clubs, restaurants and retailers.

With a focus on "cutting edge" culture, particularly music, it has now firmly established itself as the 'what's on' guide for centres such as Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen, as well as its original launch cities.

Cutting edge focus
Rumours reached How-Do that the firm behind The Skinny, Radge Media, is now looking to fill the perceived (printed) listings void in Manchester with its first edition south of the border.

However, a spokesperson commented that the firm was currently focused on developments in Scotland - including appointing a new editor - and therefore "won't be looking at a launch in Manchester any time soon."

Despite this, they did admit to having someone on the ground in the city looking to build content, while a quick search of the site revealed plenty of venue information for Manchester already in place (such as this page on Castlefield Gallery).

The spokesperson conceded that "a potential online launch" could happen within the coming months, but refused to elaborate on any further details.

I've seen enough of the Scottish editions to know that this is a good thing. Manchester is in dire need of a decent listings/culture mag (Time Out is dead now I take it?). Come on down!

So if they're not adding Manchester to their site, why so many entries in their directory?

Also a little different to what Anna is telling the market...

"This is just to let you know that The Skinny magazine up in Scotland now has roots down in Manchester, and we are going to be running listings for a few of our favourite venues down Manchester way...

It would be great if you could add me to your mailing list, and keep in touch. We're an underground cultural magazine with a big readership up here, and we hope to build up our Manchester contacts in the next few months."
