The University of Central Lancashire has become the first UK university to receive accreditation from the Periodicals Training Council for both its undergraduate and Masters courses in journalism.
The PTC has awarded two-year accreditation to the magazine ‘pathway’ of the BA Journalism degree and re-accredited the department’s MA in magazine journalism – something that course leader Julie Freer described as “really good news for our students.” The Council said of the Masters in magazine journalism, which was first pioneered in 2004, that it offered “fantastic” value for money and worked as a “rigorous and exacting course in a soft voice”. Mike Ward, UCLan’s head of journalism, described the securing of the accreditations as a “superb result” for the department.
