UCLan has teamed with Just-b to create ‘MELD’ which aims to tackle the 'collision' between old and new media.
The initiative is being launched at Selfridges in Manchester on 10 October prior to the first residential lab which is planned for mid December in Preston.
UCLan believes a ‘convergence of platforms requires a convergence of skills’ and so has teamed up with Just-b to create MELD which is envisaged as an ideas-generation and development workshop. MELD aims to explore issues such as the changing role of the journalist in the world of blogs, You Tube and Flickr, how to make a story stand out when everybody is a reporter these days and what will give professional comments and analysis more clout than an amateur blog?
A number of journalists will be paid to join selected new media practitioners at a five day residential lab where it’s hoped they will learn the necessary skills for success in the ‘connected’ world.
Simon Bucks, associate editor, Sky News Online will be one of the team leaders testing the journos.
For more information mail info@meldonline.org with “MELD Enquiry” in the subject line.
MELD has been developed by the Department of Journalism and Sandbox at UCLAN with Just-b. It is supported by the Northern Edge and the Northern Way.
UCLan also recently announced a joint initiative with Trinity whereby the latter’s senior journalists will learn more about the challenges and opportunities of multi media publishing. The new programme will replace Trinity’s in-house training course for senior Trinity journos.
