UCLan has enticed Mihir Bose and Phil Townsend to speak at its next (8th) Journalism Leaders Forum entitled “Spoiled Sports” in Preston on 29 January.
Bose Bose began as a financial journalist and won several awards before shifting his attention to sport. He is now the BBC’s sports editor.
Phil Townsend is MUFC’s director of communications.
The “Spoiled Sports form will pose the question: “Will the digital media finish off sports reporting as a credible form of journalism?”
UCLan suggests that journalists who cover top-level sport face a real challenge in the strength, wealth and power today of the top teams and controlling sports organisations who are able to increasingly control or influence what is said or written about them.
Although there is nothing particularly new about the ‘friction’ engendered between the journos and the teams/bodies, the rapidly emerging proprietary media platforms are increasingly excluding the journalist – and challenging their credibility and indeed, relevance.
And all this at a time when never have so many people around the world wanted to watch, listen and read about sport.
