Gareth Jones is to be given a posthumous award by the Ukrainian Government for exposing the nation’s plight under Stalin.
Famine exposed The former Manchester Guardian and Western Mail reporter had the story rubbished by many papers and it was only after the fall of communism that the full details came to light.
Around 10 million Ukrainians are thought to have died between 1932 and 1933 under the Stalin regime. Now, along with another Manchester Guardian correspondent, Malcolm Muggeridge, Jones is to be awarded the Order of Freedom. It comes as the country remembers 75 years since the famine. Jones died at the age of 29. He was murdered in Inner Mongolia in 1935. (Image courtesy garethjones.org and London Evening Standard) Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
