The National Union of Journalists says today that their members in Liverpool have unanimously passed a motion of no confidence in the management of Trinity Mirror on Merseyside, as the publisher announced more job losses.
Post: likely to be hit hardest
Members have also agreed to start the balloting process for industrial action, “in the event of compulsory redundancies.”
It follows yesterday’s announcement that “approximately” 17 jobs would go in the editorial department.
The Daily Post is expected to be hit the hardest.
A spokesperson said they hoped to achieve the cuts through voluntary redundancies, where possible.
According to the NUJ, 7 multi-media journalists and 4 photographers stand to lose their jobs and the copy-taking unit and electronic picture desk will both be closed.
“The relentless cuts on Merseyside are damaging the quality of the papers and websites, and the local economy. They also lead to stress and other health and safety issues for the journalists left behind,” said Lawrence Shaw, NUJ assistant organiser.
