The People has raided the ranks of The News of the World to recruit one of the country’s rising tabloid stars as its new Northern editor.
Bethany Usher, 26, joins the paper after spending two years at the NOTW in Manchester as its Northern correspondent. Her new position sees her relocate back to her native Sunderland, where she started her career on the Echo, although her geographical remit (Nottingham to the Borders) will be bringing her back to the North West regularly. Usher was reluctant to be quoted directly when speaking to How-Do (due to strict PR regulations at the paper) but said that she has greatly enjoyed the three weeks that had passed since taking up her new position. A crime reporter by trade - and by passion, from the tone of her voice – Usher has enjoyed a fast track to the top of the newspaper tree since starting at the Echo just four years ago. This has seen her achieve both critical acclaim (she was the Johnston Press trainee journalist of the year while at the local paper) and some degree of notoriety too, after reportedly being arrested at Buckingham Palace for ‘attempting to obtain pecuniary advantage by deception’. This incident, which we suspect Usher would rather we didn’t dwell on, allegedly occurred after the then 25 year old had applied for a job as a housekeeping assistant at the Royal household. Apparently the Palace were tipped off that she was an undercover reporter for the News of The World and the boys in blue subsequently pounced. In her new role Usher will be covering everything from huge boobs (see image for one of her People pieces) to gossip and her enduring passion, crime reporting. She told How-Do that this made the job an exciting challenge, with something different to tackle every day. Her success has seen her poached from every job she’s had to date, meaning she’s ‘never had to have an interview’. Apart from with How-Do for this piece of course…
