Weekly paper The Darrener in ambitious mood | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 28 March 2008
The paid-for weekly Darwen newspaper, The Darrener, which launched last October, is in expansionary mood as it plans to increase pagination, recruit more staff and launch a website.

The paper, which is edited by former BBC reporter Peter Holland, claims to be the only paper which focuses exclusively on Darwen in Lancs. Other local papers include Darwen with Blackburn or other nearby towns.

The population of Darwen is around 40,000 according to research published by Sainsbury’s said Holland.

The weekly paper costs 65p and Holland claims the title is now selling almost 3,000 copies a week with readership above 7,000. His ambition he said is to see paid-for sales at 7,000 within 12 months.

In addition to Holland, there are two full time journalists, one graphic designer, two part time production staff and the paper’s ad sales director. Holland said the company is planning to recruit more sales staff in the coming weeks and has plans for more content and production staff as the paper expands.

The paper is currently 40 pages (full colour) but will be going to 48 pages within the next fortnight said Holland. By the summer he hopes to be able to take it to 56 pages.

The increase in pagination is twofold. The software the company has been using has proven problematic but it is now being sorted said Holland. More importantly he said, there are plain commercial factors behind the up-paging: classified revenue.

The arrival of Bev Heyes from Yellow Pages in February, who replaced the previous ad director, has been dramatic. New areas of revenue have been sought and results are now coming in. The current issue sees the paper carry its first full page estate agent ads – three in fact including a full page from Your Move. Other areas are also starting to bear fruit it is claimed including motors and personal ads.

It was Heyes’ arrival said Holland which also prompted the urgency to launch a website so that print and online could work together, Prior to Heyes said Holland, it was always on the “to do” list.

The website is expected to be live within the next six weeks.

The Darrener is based at Darwen FC’s ground. Naturally enough as the paper’s proprietor - Ted Ward, a Salford property developer – also owns the football club. It was the club’s perceived lack of local coverage which was a determining factor said Holland in Ward’s decision to launch the paper.

“People said we were mad” said Holland “but Darwen is a traditional market town and the Darrener is giving a voice back to the people. Politically and socially they’re getting something they want and need.”

Beyond Darwen itself, Holland doesn’t see scope for expansion elsewhere in Lancashire. “I really don’t think such a market or the environment exists in similarly-sized towns such as Lytham for example.”

Holland joined the BBC as a regional reporter in 1988 having previously worked on the Lancashire Evening Post and the Liverpool Echo. He subsequently became one of the longest-serving reporters on BBC North West Tonight before he unexpectedly left the Beeb in April 2007.

Property developer are you sure ! I would check that carefully if I was you. Latest scam if you ask me.
 2 By upnoorth, on 29-03-2008 03:37
Does he really own Darwen Fc ask yourself is he all he seems to be ??
 3 By Twangy, on 31-03-2008 06:27
Is the Darrener still as good as the copy I received for a Christmas present and read with joy and a large Irish as the clock struck midnight? I would like a subscription if so.

The Darrener opened up in my home town and they have taken about 30 stories from me.

Unfortunately, they will not pay me for the last 15 and I've had to pass it debt collectors who are being given the run around by them, too.

It's really demoralised me as one story was a huge one and made their front page. I spent a whole weekend working on it.

So I wasn't too pleased to read on "How-do" the editor, Peter Holland declaring that the paper is going from strength to strength and they've ripped me off!

Ha! He's a master of spin is Mr. Holland. Two full time journalists??? He has a 22 year old straight from Uni who he has promoted to "Chief Reporter" and a p/time 17 year old punk girl.... who also doubles up in the club bar. She helps him understand the computer system as he's not very technical. Can't say I've noticed the other staff. There simply wouldn't be room as they work from a tiny Portacabin on the edges of Darwen football pitch.

He must have rubbed shoulders with Alistair Campbell at some stage.

Shouldn't a local paper have local knowledge?? Mr Holland is from Garstang and his "Chief Reporter" is from Wigan! Even Ted Ward is from Salford. The paper is now nothing more than an advertising medium which carries very little, if any, local news (apart from that taken from the local daily papers). The end is nigh!

Local journalism used to be an outpost of integrity but this seems gross exploitation to me. Mr Holland and Mr Ward should pay people properly, not run their affairs like a local version of Robert Maxwell.

That circulation figure is a matter of speculation. I was in the local wine shop last week when The Darrener's dizzy young reporter was in buying her booze. She was declaring it to be 6,000!
Although a trained observer she failed to notice me and the shop owner exchanging cynical glances.

I suppose cat stuck up tree is probably a major news event in Darwen.
 10 By John Doe, on 01-04-2008 21:43
Is it true that its going to be reported in the Darrener that Ted Ward has approach Steve McLaren to be the next Darwen boss or is this just another of Ted Wards fantasies !! Come back Kevin Hendry and reclaim your club before this joker destroys it completly. We are long and loyal fans and it is heartbreaking to see this man run it into the ground. Ward plays the big I am brags about his flash holidays but doesnt pay his staff and players.

Teddy should remember Darren is a very small town.... word gets around quicker than a forest fire in a parched Australia outback.
Flash and boasting doesn't go down very well here!
He and Peteeeeeeer Dutch make a good pair!

Former BBC high-flyer setting up shop in a Portakabin at a small-town football club? Ted Bovis, sorry, Ward, as the owner? Punk employees and pissed off freelancers? I see the germ of a great sitcom...
 13 By Tony Murray, on 02-04-2008 14:09
I think Patty you are definitely onto something there...all it needs is a title...how about Darrener Day, Darwen's Charlies, Peter's Out or Ted and Buried...any similar suggestions...?

How about "Birds of a feather"?
They would make a great drag act.
Viewers would need a strong stomach though...not a pretty sight....Teddy in floral dress, stockings and suspenders.

Latest news is Petee is having to deliver The Darrener himself to local paper shops.
Apparently they have sacked their distributors.
From hot shot reporter(?) at the Beeb to white van man.
Whatever next?
 22 By Dripping Lizzie, on 03-04-2008 22:33
Why did PH leave the Beeb? Was he lured by the bright lights of downtown Darwen?
 23 By fuzzbox, on 04-04-2008 07:00
bring back the darwen advertiser, and light up the bloody tower :)
 24 By Moorland Dweller, on 04-04-2008 10:17
Darwen Historical Society (60 somethings with superiority complexes!) have hi-jacked the Darrener with their boring, unedited essays about 100 year old murders and clogs and cobbled streets.

Mix that with fortnightly rants from the " For Melia" party (whoops,I'm mean" For Darwen") and the rag should be given on the National Health for insomniacs
 25 By darwen lad, on 05-04-2008 06:03
a good idea for ted ward - try to get kleenex to sponsor the cornerflags coz it can only end in tears.
26 By still as pissed off and scepti, on 10-04-2008 14:18
Just received fax from The Darrener admin saying they can't afford to pay what they owe me (outstanding invoices for almost four months) as they have cash flow problems at the mo.
So how Peter Dutch intends to employ more staff and expand when the coffers are empty- I don't know!
Maybe they intend to sell one of Darwen FCs players to raise mega bucks. Ha!
 27 By Ken, on 11-04-2008 07:06
sounds like the usual story when mr wards involved he has done this before i believe.
 28 By Cynical, on 11-04-2008 10:11
At the ludicrous price of 65p for a self-serving advertorial, it's no surprise to see piles of unsold copies on the shop counters all over town!
 29 By mary, on 13-04-2008 18:56
cynical you are right utter rubbish nothing but adverts. no wonder if they dont pay the people who provide the news
30 By pissed off freelancer, on 22-04-2008 13:35
Local Darreners are kicking the s**t out of The Darrener, Ted Ward, and his outrageous boasting on the Lancashire Telegraph forum.
He appears to owe more money than a French stock market trader disappearing overnight from his job post
 31 By Cynical, on 23-04-2008 16:56
I'll save everyone the trouble and expense of buying today's "Darrener". The front page is all about how Ted Ward is going to build a new football stadium at a cost of £22 million. Yet he can't pay his freelancers a measly few hundred pounds! Any Darreners considering having dealings with this man should be very, very wary indeed. It's time he was hounded out of town before he rips anyone else off.
 32 By j, on 23-04-2008 21:30
well said cynical you are quite right. me and my family are right behind you lets hope more people take notice and get him driven out of our town. have your read the comment on one of the other pages re darwen fc about him not being a real property developer the mans a joke full of lies they just trip off his tongue
 33 By Cynical, on 24-04-2008 11:52
j, and anyone else for that matter, just log on to the Lancashire Telegraph website, select blogs and columns, then read the comments following Harry Nuttall's column this week re Darwen FC. It tells a very sorry tale!
 34 By Doris, on 01-06-2008 20:41
Leave the Darrener alone, it is the most entertaining read of the week with its speling mistaks and missing crosswords. Puts a smile on my face without fail.
 35 By Furious Freelance, on 17-06-2008 19:42
The Darrener failed to pay me for 2 days' work. I warn others: DO NOT FALL FOR HOLLAND AND WARD'S FALSE PROMISES. They're on their arses and they know it.
36 By Now paid freelancer, on 18-06-2008 14:04
Dear Furious Freelance

I was in your position once but thankfully a debt collection company managed to force it out of Ward.

Peter Dutch pretends he has nothing to do with finances. Ha.
He is unprofessional commissioning freelance work when he knows the invoice will not be paid.

37 By Sick to death of Peter Holland, on 22-06-2008 18:46
Seems odd to me that Alison Brown (Dutch's partner) and local 'celebrity', doesn't offer him a an advertising slot in her editorial role at Radio Lancashire at the expense of the licence payer to advertising his apparently discredited and dying rag. Seems the only right thing to do as he is being portrayed as a charlatan and a bit of a rascal.
PS. Should stewart Flinders read this, he surely doesn't expect people to believe that Peter got the sack from the BBC for asking for an increase on his 45K salary. Tut tut Stewart... get real!
 38 By ?, on 22-06-2008 18:47
Might be interesting for any Darrener readers to read about self named Dutch.
