The Liverpool Daily Post is joining forces with the Liverpool Culture Company, Open Culture, National Museums Liverpool and Phil (and Alexis) Redmond to help craft a map that will convey the cultural and geographical boundaries of the city of Liverpool.
The idea is to create an artwork that will detail the impact of the city, and its sons and daughters, on people and places across the world – celebrating its myriad influences and acting as a source of pride and inspiration for the local populace.
Redmond: lasting legacy
To achieve this the Post is currently asking its readers for their ideas as to what should be included on the map, allowing them to take the role of artistic directors on the project.
Once the subject matters have been finalised an artist will be brought onboard to create the map, which will then go on display in the new Museum of Liverpool when it opens in 2010.
The parties involved in the project are currently seeking to commission the artist, whom they will pay £20,000, excluding the cost of the materials and installation.
Phil Redmond said of the concept: "The Liverpool Map will be a lasting legacy for the city and is a great opportunity for an artist to leave their work as a reminder in years to come of how people in Merseyside saw themselves, culturally, geographically and historically.
“As such this is not just open to established artists but those starting their careers and wanting to make a real impact."
The deadline for those interested in getting involved in the project is 30 June.
