The new £150m arena on the King’s Waterfront, will be called the Liverpool Echo Arena, in a five year sponsorship deal agreed between Trinity Mirror North West and the Arena & Convention Centre (ACC) management.
The value of the deal has not been disclosed but it is believed to comprise a mix of both hard cash and payment (promotion) in kind.
The deal means that the region’s two largest entertainment venues in Liverpool and Manchester (MEN Arena) are now respectively sponsored by the region’s two best selling local newspapers.
The deal takes effect this month. The Echo arena is due to open next January and has already taken a number of substantial bookings. The agreement, which runs until 2012, involves naming rights for the arena - not the adjoining convention centre, whose target audience is broader and more national than the Arena’s primarily localised target market. It is understood that ACC management are seeking a separate sponsor for naming rights of the convention centre.
Alastair Machray Liverpool Echo editor Alastair Machray said: "The people of Liverpool have wanted an arena for years and we are delighted the Echo will be a part of it.
"The Liverpool Echo Arena is one of the most exciting developments in the city’s recent history and it will bring huge economic and cultural benefits to the whole of Merseyside.
"This deal links the region’s best selling local newspaper with a venue which is already on course to become a world leader in the entertainment industry.”
ACC chief executive Bob Prattey said: "The Liverpool Echo is one of the best known brands in the city and we’re absolutely delighted to have signed this deal. The Echo is part of the fabric of Liverpool and that is exactly what ACC Liverpool is about to become.
“The deal will bring a raft of opportunities to both parties and I’m looking forward to a long and very fruitful relationship with Trinity Mirror North West.”
Trinity Mirror North West & North Wales managing director Sara Wilde added: “Our portfolio of newspapers, websites and magazines reaches more than eight out of 10 people in this region alone, so they will play a vital part in helping to publicise the events which will take place at the arena.”
The Liverpool Echo Arena incorporates a 10,000 plus seat arena, a convention centre with capacity for 1,350 delegates and adjoining exhibition space of 7,000 square metres.
ACC Liverpool’s partners are Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Vision, English Partnerships, the European Objective One programme and the NWDA.
