The reshuffle in the Cabinet has seen Leigh MP Andy Burnham replace James Purnell, the MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, as the new culture secretary.
Reflecting the vagaries of public life, Purnell was ranked seventh in How-Do’s Media 100 last November.
Burnham, 38, entered Parliament as MP for Leigh in 2001.
Purnell Burnham was previously the chief secretary to the Treasury, but also worked as a special advisor to culture secretary Chris Smith from 1998 to 2001.
London 2012 will figure highly in his immediate and short term agenda but he also has several broadcasting issues to address in the coming years.
A second consecutive culture minister from a North West constituency is a slice of good fortune for a region with interests in the future intentions of the BBC, ITV Granada, Channel 4, QVC and other substantial broadcast and digital media companies.
