Brian Greasley, previously MD of Digital Bridges (t/a I-Play) and a former general manager of BT Cellnet’s Genie Internet, has been appointed as the MD of Peel Media’s mediacity:uk development.
Brian Greasley, previously MD of Digital Bridges (t/a I-Play) and a former general manager of BT Cellnet’s Genie Internet, has been appointed as the MD of Peel Media’s mediacity:uk development.

The news follows the recent announcement of Jane Deane as programme director .

Whereas Dean’s appointment was decided upon a by a panel including Salford city council, the NWDA and Central Salford URC, this six figure appointment has been reached by Peel on its own – with the aid of headhunters naturally.

His last full time role was at Digital Bridges based in Fife in Scotland. The company, which traded as I-Play was a darling of the Scottish establishment as it promised to revolutionise games on mobile phones and opened offices internationally.

One of its most prominent deals was with the BBC and its 'The Weakest Link' programme.

High profile backers of the company included Brian Souter, Sir Bill Gammell and Hamish Grossart. The company was also backed by venture capitalists Apax Partners and Argo Global Capital.

The early promise proved unfounded however and Greasley was replaced as CEO last year. Digital Bridges was bought by Oberon Media of New York for circa $100m in the summer – a figure which it is believed represented a capital loss for its investors.

Prior to I-Play, Greasley was general manager at Genie Internet which was owned by BT Cellnet.

Genie Internet claimed to be the world’s first service to deliver information from the web to a mobile phone in 1997 and in 2000 the company launched the UK's first fully operational, open and commercially available WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) services.

He left Genie for Digital Bridges in 2002.

Property company Peel recently secured £360m of debt facilities from the Bank of Scotland to help finance its development of the 200 acre site at mediacity:uk.

The first phase of the development, the 37 acre site across from the Lowry is underpinned by the BBC’s requirement of almost 500,000 sq ft of space and it is probable that Salford University will be relocating a Faculty to the Quays which will require an additional c400,000 sq ft of space.

Granada's discussions with Peel are expected to conclude with the broadcaster relocating to a site adjacent to the Imperial War Museum in Trafford Park rather than in mediacity itself.

Peel’s ambitions are for over 3 million sq ft of occupied space within phase one.
