Peter Masters, also known as Burnt Toast, scooped the ‘most sustainable design product’ gong at this year’s 100% Design exhibition, and in so doing became the North West’s only winner at the new awards scheme.
The award winning piece
Although 100% Design is a firm fixture on the creative calendar, this was the first time awards were given out, making Masters’ win all the sweeter. He received the accolade for his glass dining table ‘Final Stand’, which was constructed from recycled glass and wood. The glass is water jet cut, using only 20 minutes of electricity, and delivered to customers in Masters’ bio-diesel fuelled van. Final Stand appeared on the Design Initiative’s group stand.
Speaking about the win he commented: “I'm delighted. I believe it is important that designers provide an intelligent response to the ethical use of materials, energy and recycling. I believe it can be done without compromising our ideas and we can still produce aesthetically pleasing, beautiful objects. "
Frank Collins, DI’s project manager for the event, added: “As a support agency, sustainability and resource efficiency is a priority and should be high on the agenda of designers in the region. Wherever possible we seek to work with and encourage designers to respond to this challenge.
“We are extremely proud that Burnt Toast's environmental and sustainability credentials have been recognised in this way.”
