Bury FC has become the first club outside the Premier League to install Bluetooth technology within its ground… but it hasn’t exactly got the fans singing its praises from Gigg Lane's terraces just yet.
Technology-savvy Bury announced at the end of last month that it had partnered with XDI-UK to provide the service to fans, initially for its three home pre-season friendly games.
Gigg Lane goers that had their Bluetooth mobiles activated would receive team news straight to their phones, along with four adverts that the club promised would be beneficial to supporters.
Early indications for the initiative looked positive, with the transmitters at the ground picking up over 800 phones with their Bluetooth on and waiting for last month's game with Sheffield Wednesday.
However, according to a statement on the club’s site “of that 800+ devices found, it would seem that not many received any data.”
This was due to supporters missing alerts sent to their phones - alerts that they had to accept to receive the information. It seems that with only 60 seconds to do this, in a boisterous match day environment, the huge majority missed the boat.
This meant that those watching out for the alerts at Saturday’s game with Brentford would have been disappointed, as will fans that are looking for updates at tonight's home game with Burnley.
All is not lost, however, as “we hope to have the service fully operational in time for the next home game with Morecambe on 23 August 08” the site informed us.
Blackburn Rovers introduced the system, although through a different operator, in January of last year.
