Business journalist McFarlane relishing his new role at the Chamber | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 12 November 2007
Nigel McFarlane, 39, the former business editor of the Bolton News, has said his new job, as the local policy manager covering Bolton and Bury for the Greater Manchester Chamber, is “desperately enjoyable.”

Although he told How-Do he had really enjoyed and valued his four years as business editor at the Bolton News, he said there were too many times he had to watch from the sidelines and an offer from the Chamber ultimately proved irresistable.

“Bolton and Bury are on the verge of momentous change over the next few decades and to be honest it was often frustrating to be at the paper watching it all happen and not really be able to play a more meaningful part in their development.

McFarlane
“I’d been reporting on the all the changes the chambers in Bolton and Bury had been through over the past two to three years and I just felt there was more of a challenge to be had by helping the chamber as it tried to reposition itself at the heart of what’s going on round here.”

Prior to the Bolton News, McFarlane was a freelancer for local, regional and national media and an occasional business consultant.

“I’ve never really had a formal career plan” he said “And at the moment I’m having a lot of fun.”

His replacement at the paper has not yet been chosen but it is understood an announcement is imminent.

McFarlane has not entirely severed his links with the title though, as a passionate Manchester Phoenix supporter, he still edits the News’ ice hockey web pages.

So as he's not a journalist any more - not even a PR. So presumably there's no need for How Do to mention him ever again.
