Cine North takes to the hills for rural screenings

Cine North will tour Cumbria and Lancashire this winter with the aim of improving access to high quality digital cinema.

Last Friday it screened West is West, pictured, at Helsington & Brigsteer Village Hall, Kendal.

Other locations include Edgeworth, near Blackburn; Newton, in the Forest of Bowland; and Downham at the foot of Pendle Hill.

Screenings will range from classics such as Casablanca to children’s hits like Gnomeo and Juliet.

Cine North is delivered by Cine Yorkshire and the Ilkley-based community arts group, Blaize. Rural arts specialists Spot On and Highlights Rural Touring Scheme are also involved.

Emily Penn, Cine Yorkshire project manager, said: "Cinema can inspire, educate and celebrate our culture, but perhaps most importantly, it brings people together in communities where opportunities for unifying social experiences are becoming increasingly rare.

"Since our first screening in October 2010, we’ve shown over 500 films to more than 16,000 people, many of whom live hours away from their nearest cinema."

Cine North is supported by the BFI, Creative England and the National Media Museum, Bradford.
