The Liverpool Culture Company has revealed that between January and July the city has received national and international media coverage that is worth an estimated £70m. However, that success doesn’t appear to have impacted on its ultimate fate.
Coverage of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations has been widespread throughout the year, peaking with special events such as Ringo Starr’s opening concert performance and last weekend’s walkabout by giant spider La Princess. Spinning away: LCC and Laprincess In total the LCC have noted 7,500 items of coverage across a diverse range of media sources, leading them to arrive at the £70m figure. This has led council leader Warren Bradley to tell the local press that “every penny invested in the Culture year will come back tenfold.” His observation is given stock by the fact that Liverpool has now risen to the position of third most popular city destination in the country (after London and Edinburgh), attracting an (estimated) extra 1.5m visitors so far this year. Nevertheless, the apparent success of the Company has not safeguarded it from the fact that the year long celebrations are speeding towards a full stop. And with that its raison d’etre will have gone the way of a certain big mechanical spider and ‘left the building.’ The council admitted on Tuesday evening that the LCC would soon be wound up, but hoped to redeploy many of its 100 staff elsewhere within the local authority framework. It is not currently clear how that will affect the communications staff that have helped garner such positive coverage for the city over the course of the past year. Discussions on the subject are now said to be ‘underway.’ Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
