Newspaper of the year though returned to the Warrington Guardian with judges saying: “Its news reporters weren’t afraid to stick their noses in where it hurts.”
Liverpool Daily Post's Ben Schofield won young journalist of the year and the Post also scooped business writer of the year (David Bartlett) and digital journalist of the year (Laura Davis).
The Liverpool Echo’s Paddy Shennan won feature writer of the year and Luke Traynor was named reporter of the year.
The 2 papers shared a couple of awards with Gareth Jones picking up photographer of the year for both publications and Laura Davis (Post) and Jade Wright (Echo) jointly winning entertainment writer of the year.
Southport Visiter won scoop of the year.
On the broadcast front, Granada Reports picked up the editorial team of the year and sports journalist of the year because of an “all round ability to deliver news, features, sport and entertainment in ways that both informed and brought a smile or a tear.”
BBC North West Tonight’s Jayne Barrett was named television broadcast journalist of the year.
“Over 12 months she got completely under the skin of the big events, generating interest with her own genuine enthusiasm,” commented judges.
Radio broadcaster went to the BBC Radio Merseyside news team.
A special achievement award was handed to Granada Reports’ entertainment reporter, Caroline Hacking. This was “in recognition of her talent and all-round ability [...] one of the brightest sparks in the region and a star in the making.”
The judges quoted included Paul Newman, MediaCityUK’s director of communications; Paul Byrne of the Daily Mirror; the Yorkshire Post’s Peter Charlton; Jan Lever, Newsquest; and Richard Catlow, chair of the Society of Editors.
