InfoUSA move to Manchester set to create 50 new jobs | Print |  Email to a friend

As reported on How-Do yesterday, Nebraska-based research firm infoUSA is set to open a new operation in Manchester to build the first ever comprehensive database of UK businesses. How-Do can now reveal that the move will create some 50 new jobs, with work commencing on the project in January 2008.

Speaking to How-Do from the company’s American HQ, Amit Khanna, infoUSA’s database and technology president, described the plan as “a brand new start-up enterprise”.

He predicted that the gargantuan task – involving mapping details such as staff numbers, contacts and management names for every UK business – would be ready for market in only one year, with a rolling updating procedure taking place after that.

“We will be sending employees from the U.S. to train and advise on the operation,” Khanna informed How-Do. “This expansion will require about 50 staff members that will compile the database and then continue maintaining and updating the project once it has been compiled.”

On hearing the news yesterday commentators had remarked on the plausibility of successfully achieving this task, but Khanna seemed unfazed by the sheer scale of the undertaking:

“We are experts at this type of project.  To develop the U.K. business database, we are leveraging our in-depth knowledge and the 35 years of experience that we have gained building a successful company in the U.S. This will allow us to expand our company and bridge the gap that exists between the two areas.”

He continued: “(this) represents a huge development in the Direct Marketing industry in the UK and we think it will be very successful. We plan on verifying the information every year and enhancing what is already publicly available. To carry out our goal, we will make 2.5 million phone calls each year, to ensure that our data is constantly updated and comprehensive.”

Khanna also confirmed that the new operation would be completely separate from infoUSA’s sister operation ORC International, which has an office in Stretford’s City Point building, although he was unable to reveal any details of exactly where it would be housed.

As noted yesterday though, there will be no out-sourcing with everything being conducted directly through the new set-up.
