Fashion students from the MMU have joined forces with Manchester City Council and Harvey Nichols to launch an environmentally friendly shopping bag for the store’s food customers.
Students from the university’s fashion courses were briefed by the council’s waste and recycling team to create a bag that would appeal to the growing ‘eco-chic’ movement, while actively educating users on the damaging environmental impact of plastic bags. In response Jagruti Mistry and Katy Jeanes created a 100% cotton bag, in two shades of green, which Harvey Nichols has agreed to exclusively stock. The bag will be given away containing ‘the little green leaflet’, that gives information about the 13billion plastic bags used in the UK each year. It launches today, the 26th September, in the retailer’s Manchester store.Councillor Neil Swannick, Manchester City Council's executive member for Environment, said of the project: " Waste minimisation is the most important step we can take in reducing waste to landfill and the one legacy we do not want to leave future generations is a mountain of plastic bags. This is a great way to raise awareness about such a serious problem and of course the challenge has now been set for other retailers to take this on board too." MMU senior lecturer George Bouvier added that the student’s design was “lovely and simple, versatile and usable.” http://www.mmu.ac.uk/
