In a survey conducted by streetGov on the streets of Liverpool, the majority of respondents were generally positive about the impending Capital of Culture status. With only 20% deeming it to be a “big waste of time and money”…

The Wilmslow based market research agency set out to garner the opinions of the city’s young people about the 08 celebrations, quizzing around 400 16 to 26 year olds.

The majority of responses were positive with “a surprisingly high proportion” of 81% of those questionned stating that they were keen to get involved in the planned calendar of events.

Two third’s of interviewees were also ‘keen to find out more’, with 92% believing that the status will help attract more visitors to the city and 84% opining that it may lead to increased job and training opportunities for young people.

77% added that there would be a subsequent increase in local pride, with a huge 86% believing it will boost Liverpool’s standing internationally.

However, on the flip side of the coin 52% said that there were not enough events organised for young people, with the aforementioned 20% believing the whole exercise to be a waste of time.

A third also thought that the 08 plans were simply an excuse for politicians to raise their own profiles, while 27% stated that the events were not aimed at people of their age.

In perhaps the most shocking indictment of the city’s youth, a staggering 20% had no idea who Ringo Starr is. Meaning they’re obviously not fans of Thomas the Tank Engine.

The great man will be weeping into his alcohol free champagne come 11 January.
