Stars from the worlds of music and media have met at Urbis to discuss ways in which the achievements and life of the late Tony Wilson can be suitably commemorated.
Wilson Steve Coogan, Peter Hook, Peter Saville and Paul Morley were among the high profile figures that gathered to discuss the topic in a reportedly lively debate, chaired by Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese. The assembled audience heard several suggestions that struck a chord, with one of the favoured options apparently being the opening of a ‘creative arts summer school.’ In response to this the council has already agreed to make funds available. Other ideas included renaming Whitworth Street West, the home of the once legendary nightclub The Hacienda, as Anthony Wilson Way and attaching a commemorative plaque to the city hall. On leaving the meeting New Order and Joy Division bassist Peter Hook was quoted as saying: "There was a fantastic array of people there. It was a great compliment to Tony to get so many influential people together. Things are still in the planning stage but I think we all agree we've got to do something. "I think Tony would be delighted to realise he's still as much of a catalyst now as he was then.” Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
