The government is launching a new campaign to ask the over 50’s to question their seemingly ever-increasing alcohol consumption, with Manchester being used as the test bed.
The “think you might be drinking too much” activity is being spearheaded by NHS Manchester and hits the streets, literally, next month with a concerted outdoor advertising push. The initiative comes as a response to an exponential increase in the amount of alcohol that those in their mid to late middle ages appear to be consuming. This was highlighted recently by Alcohol Concern, which released figures showing that more than 1 million over-65-year-olds exceed recommended alcohol limits. Staggeringly, this marks a 75% rise in figures for women and a 31% rise in men over the past decade and a half. The move is part of a wider nationwide initiative to ease the burden on the NHS, and people’s health, which arises as part of the apparent UK penchant for drinking to excess.
