Arguably the biggest football brand in the world has teamed up with the biggest phone company in the Middle East, in a deal that is set to net Man United £10m over the next five years.
The current Premier League and European Champions, who got their campaign off to a less than flying start this weekend, have brokered an innovative partnership with Saudi Telecom. "Hello Saudi Arabia!" This will see the phone firm receive the rights to use the club’s logo and imagery on its marketing in the Middle East – an area, like many regions of the globe, that contains millions of United fanatics. The tie-up will also see Saudi Telecom offering various club-related content, including video of match highlights, to its substantial customer base. It is thought that the marketing deal is potentially the biggest non-shirt sponsorship agreement in the history of British football. Other club sponsors include Nike, Budweiser, Betfred and main shirt sponsor AIG, which has reportedly paid £56m to get its logo splashed on the club’s famous strip... a cash bounty that is almost big enough to pay Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo’s wages… for a couple of weeks at least.
